Posted: 05-03-2006 :
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – Don Bailey, Ph.D., distinguished fellow at RTI International and director of the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will today be presented the Research Career Scientist Award from the Academy on Mental Retardation.
The award honors a distinguished person whose professional career has significantly advanced the field of developmental disabilities.
Bailey’s work has focused on early intervention for young children with disabilities and their families. In the past decade, he has studied children and families with fragile X syndrome, the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability. Bailey is currently planning a large study of newborn screening for conditions such as fragile X.
Bailey will receive the award at the annual Academy dinner in Montreal, Canada.
Tomorrow, he will deliver the Career Scientist Address titled “On the Curious Re-Emergence of Questions as to Whether Early Intervention Would Benefit Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities: My Interesting Travels in the World of Newborn Screening.”
Bailey joined RTI in November 2005 and collaborates on the Partnership for Human Genomics and Molecular Epidemiology (PGME), a team of interdisciplinary scientists working to unlock the mysteries of cell activity, genetic coding and human disease.
The Academy on Mental Retardation, founded in 1963, fosters and supports efforts toward improving both the quality and quantity of research in mental retardation.
