North Carolina Jaycees hold convention to focus on community service

ASHEBORO, NC – The North Carolina Jaycees’ Fall Convention will focus on community service and the Jaycees’ impact in communities across the state and nation. The North Carolina Jaycees’ Fall Convention will be held at the new Marriott Hotel in downtown Winston-Salem beginning Friday, September 23 through Sunday, September 25.

At the luncheon on Saturday (begins at 1:30 p.m.), Jaycees’ chapters from across the state will hear from guest speakers Craig Lloyd of the American Cancer Society and Theron Few from the NC/SC Salvation Army.

Lloyd works at the American Cancer Society’s Raleigh office and will speak about a new partnership between the US Jaycees and the American Cancer Society.

Few, 72, is a former South Carolina Jaycee is coordinating fundraising efforts between the North Carolina Jaycees’ chapters to support those displaced by Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Few will speak about the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina and offer advice on how the Jaycees’ members across the state can help. The North Carolina Jaycees will present him with a check for Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief during Saturday night’s dinner meeting.

In addition to these guest speakers, the North Carolina Jaycees is excited to welcome Dr. Julie Metzger, 85th President of the United States Jaycees, as a guest speaker during Saturday night’s dinner meeting (starts at 7 p.m.). Dr. Metzger is originally from the home chapter of Boone County, Kentucky. Dr. Metzger is the Vice-Mayor of the City of Florence and is active in her local community’s Citizen Corps Council and Health Department Board. She is an optometrist and owns her own business, Metzger Eye Care, in Florence, Kentucky. Dr. Metzger will speak on the importance of community service throughout our nation and the response to Hurricane Katrina nationwide. She will also offer general remarks about the Jaycees organization and its future.

The North Carolina Jaycees is an organization for young professionals, ages 21-40, focusing on leadership and individual development through community service and hands-on experiences.
