Nov 13: Gen. Hugh Shelton, Former Joint Chiefs Chairman, to Speak at Hood Hargett Breakfast Club (Charlotte)

Charlotte, N.C. -- Gen. Hugh Shelton, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will be the featured speaker at the next meeting of Hood Hargett Breakfast Club, Charlotte’s premier networking organization.

In addition to Shelton’s speech, the event will also include recognition of special military guests in attendance. The event will be held at Carmel Country Club Friday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 a.m.

“As America responds to security threats at home and abroad, perhaps no one is more qualified to discuss our national security than Gen. Shelton,” said Jenn Snyder, executive director of Hood Hargett Breakfast Club. “It’s also important that we take time to remember our servicemen and women – and this breakfast is a perfect opportunity.”

Shelton became the 14th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1997 and served two terms. Throughout his four-year tenure, U.S. forces were in heavy demand and participated in numerous operations around the world.

More than 40 local and regional businesses are members of Hood Hargett Breakfast Club. The monthly breakfast events provide an opportunity for members to network with each other and entertain clients and prospective clients. Also, at each event, a local student athlete is awarded a $1,000 scholarship as part of the Liz Murray Scholarship Fund. Hood Hargett Breakfast Club has awarded more than $180,000 to more than 150 local high school students.

About Gen. Hugh Shelton
During his tenure as chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Shelton worked tirelessly on behalf of service members, their families and military retirees by championing a number of landmark, quality-of-life initiatives including: the largest pay raise in 18 years; pay table and bonus reform; and critical improvements in both retirement and healthcare programs. He made great strides in improving the readiness and retention of the current force, while simultaneously crafting Joint Vision 2020 – the roadmap for the Future Joint Force. Shelton also established the Joint Forces Command to consolidate joint experimentation efforts and guide the transformation of the U.S. armed forces for the 21st century.

Shelton holds a master’s degree from Auburn University and has attended Harvard University, the Air Command and Staff College and the National War College. He was honored with the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest award the United States Congress can bestow. He has been honored and decorated for his distinguished public service by numerous military and civilian organizations in the United States and overseas. In 2001, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth.
