Winston-Salem -- NC—88.5 WFDD, the National Public Radio affiliate serving the Piedmont, will air two special programs exploring the issues of free speech, government secrets and national security.
The programs are both part of Wake Forest University’s Secrets Vs. Security series, a two-part event sponsored by the WFU’s Secrest Artist Series and Voices of Our Time lecture series.
On February 10th, WFDD will air “The Battle for the Pentagon Papers”, a live docudrama starring John Heard. Part I will begin at 6 p.m. with Part II starting one hour later. The play will explore the legal battle between the government and The Washington Post over The Pentagon Papers, a 1971 government document dealing with the Vietnam War leaked to the media by former military analyst Daniel Ellsberg. The radio play was performed live on January 17 & 18 in Wait Chapel on the campus of Wake Forest University.
On February 17th WFDD will broadcast a pre-recorded lecture with Daniel Ellsberg entitled “Iraq & Iran: The Need for New Pentagon Papers”. The lecture was taped live on January 24th at Brendle Recital Hall on the campus of Wake Forest University.
“It is very appropriate for WFDD to air these two events,” said WFDD general manager Denise Franklin, “The kind of in-depth, socially conscious dialog that occurred at these events is exactly what you hear every day on public radio stations like WFDD. We are thrilled to bring these events to a wider audience.”
88.5 WFDD, the NPR news and Triad Arts station broadcasting from Wake Forest University, is the only public radio station of its kind located in the Piedmont Triad. It broadcasts news, information, and public affairs programming covering the arts, people, and institutions in the area. The state’s charter NPR member, 88.5 WFDD is the longest continuously broadcasting public radio station in North Carolina. It is a member of the North Carolina Public Radio Association.
