UNCG Responds to Growing Demand for Online Courses with New Graduate Certificate in Global Studies
Posted: 10-22-2008 : GREENSBORO, N.C.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG today announced a new online, graduate-level certificate program in global studies that engages students in pressing economic, environmental and social issues and challenges them to become fully-informed global citizens.

Offered through the UNCG Division of Continual Learning’s Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Program, the new certificate responds to a growing demand for online learning.

“Thanks to instant communication and advances in technology and transportation, traditional borders no longer apply,” said Kathleen Forbes, director of Liberal Studies Programs, UNCG. “Students in our program will learn to think across boundaries and will get to explore major issues that affect our increasingly interconnected world. They will broaden their knowledge of other cultures, economic and political systems and examine trends that are likely to affect all of us in the not too distant future.” To be admitted to the program, students must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and must apply for admission to the UNCG Graduate School. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required. Five interdisciplinary online courses are necessary to earn a certificate – three required and two elective (see list below). These courses can be counted toward the 11 required for the Master’s degree if a student decides to continue in the program.

Required
  • The Contemporary World
  • The Global Economy
  • Global Perspectives in Science Elective
  • The Islamic World: Perceptions and Realities
  • Global Arts: Windows into the Hearts of Other Cultures
  • Current Problems in the Middle East: An Historical Perspective
  • The Dragon Awakes: Charting the Course of Modern China
  • Cultural Identities: Contemporary Non-Western Literature
  • Voices from Latin America: Why Don’t They Like Us?

  • The Reel World: Contemporary Issues on Screen

UNCG’s award-winning online courses have been recognized for excellence and innovation by state, regional and national organizations. Courses in the global studies certificate program offer the same superior quality through interactive case studies, simulations, online dialogue and debate—allowing students to examine contemporary global issues and better understand themselves and the world around them.

“You may not find easy answers, but we guarantee you’ll leave with better questions,” Forbes said.
