Two Wake Forest University Professors Featured in WFDD Radio Documentary
Posted: 11-24-2008 : WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.
Winston-Salem, NC — 88.5 WFDD, the NPR® News and Triad Arts Station broadcasting from Wake Forest University, will air a half-hour radio documentary featuring two Wake Forest University professors, each with an emotional family connection to the Holocaust. The Letters will air on Tuesday, November 25th, at 6pm, and again on Saturday, December 13th, at 12noon. Mikki Felsenburg, associate professor of legal writing, and Helga Welsh, associate professor of political science, encountered one another on campus, shortly after Felsenburg discovered some decades-old letters in her grandmother’s wallet. The letters were written in German, and Felsenburg sought Welsh’s assistance in reading them. Felsenburg’s grandparents were killed in the Holocaust. Welsh’s father served in Hitler’s army. The women’s cathartic interaction unveiled family secrets on both sides.
This month marks the 70th anniversary of Kristallnacht, a single night of murder and destruction that many historians consider to be the beginning of the Holocaust. Felsenburg’s discovery of her grandparents’ hidden letters, and Welsh’s assistance in translating them, is helping Felsenburg get to know the grandparents who made her life possible, and at the same time, assuaging inherited guilt for Welsh. Tune in for this documentary special on Tuesday, November 25th, at 6pm, and visit the WFDD website, www.wfdd.org, for more information. The documentary will repeat on December 13th at 12noon.
