Raleigh Financial Adviser W. Landon Watts Believes Protecting Your Family and Assets is More Important Than Ever
Posted: 02-05-2009 : RALEIGH, N.C.
RALEIGH, N.C. – W. Landon Watts, a financial adviser for Raleigh-based wealth strategists, Banyan Rock & Talent, believes now is an important time for people to consider life insurance as a way to protect family members.
As job losses continue to mount—more than 72,000 in North Carolina between November 2007 and November 2008 according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics—people are facing increased debt and decreased value in assets such as homes, retirement plans and investment plans. This could lead to a large financial burden should the main income earner pass away.
A recent survey by the Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education (LIFE), a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping consumers make smart decisions to safeguard their families’ financial futures, found that 75 percent of Americans with dependents are worried about how their family would manage financially should they die, and that 27 percent of adult Americans say they would cancel their insurance policy to lower expenses during tough economic times. Watts warns that canceling existing life insurance policies may create long-term financial hardship.
“The short-term savings that a family may gain by canceling a life insurance policy are nothing compared to the financial loss a family would incur if there was a premature death,” says Watts. “Also, the costs to purchase a new policy may increase significantly.”
The key is for an individual to evaluate their situation before making a decision. Factors such as whether or not they are married or have children, how much debt they have and what money they want set aside for their children’s college expenses all can play a role in deciding what type and how much coverage to look for.
“Life insurance is often overlooked as the core of a solid financial plan,” says Watts. “Having a good policy in place will ensure that your family is protected financially, and it will provide them proper time to grieve and heal.”
