The Museum of Life and Science's Brontosaurus head, which was taken sometime on Sunday, May 31 has been recovered. Investigators from the Durham Police Department stated they found the fixture in the woods near Preston Andrews Road sometime around noon today. According to Durham Police, it is believed to be a high school prank.
The Brontosaurus model was part of the Museumıs old Dinosaur Trail which closed in 1996 due to damage the exhibit sustained by Hurricane Fran. It is currently unknown whether the Brontosaurus can or cannot be restored according to Museum officials.
The Museum of Life and Science is located at 433 Murray Avenue in Durham North Carolina. For additional information about the Museum, please call 919.220.5429 or visit www.lifeandscience.org
ABOUT THE OLD DINOSAUR TRAIL In 1967, when the Museum of Life and Science was known as the Childrenıs Museum, it opened a trail on its campus of prehistoric creatures. This trail became known in the community as the Dinosaur Trail. The trail wound through the woods and across the Ellerbe Creek on the Museum campus, which at that time was only on the south side of Murray Avenue, where the picnic dome is currently located. Designed and constructed by Museum Curator Richard Wescott, the trail was meant to take visitors on a journey through the last 300 million years. Unfortunately in 1996, Hurricane Fran severely damaged the trail, forcing its closure to visitors.
