Spartan Crossing Community Ground-Breaking Holds Ground-Breaking
Posted: 07-24-2009 : GREENSBORO, N.C.

Greensboro, NC -- UNCG students wanting to live green will get their chance this fall: a new, eco-friendly student apartment complex opens to residents in August.

This 40-unit complex, called Spartan Crossing, is located three blocks from UNCG campus at 700 Granite Street. A community ground-breaking, literally, will be held Monday July 27 at 4:00pm at the Spartan Crossing property. Developers will break ground in the Spartan Crossing Community Garden by planting rosemary and basil. Instead of cutting a large nylon ribbon as part of a traditional Grand Opening, the project developers will cut a recyclable newspaper chain.

Jay Robinson, Managing Director of Spartan Crossing, commented, “We wanted to offer students a better place to live.” Robinson continued, “Spartan Crossing implements an intentional plan for eco-friendly design and living, and also gives residents unique amenities and services. We think Spartan Crossing is a completely original offering for students- and one they’ll want to call home.” Eco-friendly features of Spartan Crossing include: the recycling of three original houses on the property (the houses were moved and donated to local charities rather than being demolished and sent to a landfill), a tree preservation area, energy star appliances in every unit, natural exterior brick and stone procured and manufactured locally, energy efficient windows, carpet manufactured using 80% recycled material, low VOC paints to improve air quality, bike racks, extended on-site recycling services, aerators on all faucets, fluorescent bulbs throughout the property, and the community herb and vegetable garden, which was donated by A&A Plants and planted by members of Urban Harvest.

A LEED accredited professional consulted developers on the Spartan Crossing project. Partner Ralph Jones notes, “We ventured to reduce Spartan Crossing’s environmental impact from concept to construction to occupancy. I think students who value eco-friendly choices in their everyday lives will respond positively to this new housing option in Greensboro.” Spartan Crossing is managed by Reliant Properties, with offices located at 819 N. Elm Street, Greensboro, NC 27401.
