RALEIGH, N.C. -- The NC Assisted Living Association announced the appointment of Peggy A. Smith as NCALA’s Executive Director. Ms. Smith previously served as the Program Director at the Alzheimer’s Association Eastern NC Chapter. She replaces Jerry L. Cooper, who left NCALA to accept the Senior Vice President position at the Assisted Living Federation of America in Washington, D.C. in July.
“We are fortunate to have Peggy to lead the NCALA team,” said Tonya Cloutier, NCALA Board President. “Peggy had the best combination of a successful professional track record and personal experience with seniors and those who care for them. Peggy was one of very few candidates who have direct experience in working in assisted living communities in North Carolina and that was very important to our NCALA Board.”
Ms. Smith received her BS in Education and MS in Exercise Physiology from West Virginia University. She also has Non-Profit Management Certificate from Duke University. Ms. Smith has the distinction of being part of the 1980 Women’s National Championship Basketball Team during her time at Old Dominion University. “My aim is to bring that team approach to NCALA in each endeavor we undertake – whether it’s providing the highest quality training for assisted living staff or providing expertise in implementation of senior care policy at the Department of Health and Human Services,” stated Smith.
NCALA is a trade association established in 1994 as the state affiliate of the Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA). NCALA’s more than 180 members communities provide appropriate, supportive housing and services for individuals with compromised health and safety needs and with varied income levels. NCALA members serve more than 14,000 residents, 4500 of whom are low-income and who receive state assistance.
Ms. Smith can be reached at the NCALA office, 3392 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC 27609, by telephone at 919.467.2486, or by email at peggy@ncala.org.
