Noted Sport Psychologist Gives Beach2Battleship Competitive Edge
Posted: 11-04-2009 : WILMINGTON, N.C.
Wilmington, NC – Triathletes competing at Beach2Battleship this weekend will have a unique opportunity to gain a competitive edge from Dr. Jeffrey Brown, renowned author and clinical sport psychologist on faculty at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Brown is an expert on the psychological aspects of marathons and competing, and will share his insights with Beach2Battleship competitors.
“Having consulted with thousands of competitors, I know for certain that serious athletes are passionate about what they do and how they live life,” says Dr. Brown. “They’ve figured out that competing is more than just crossing a finish line; it’s something that permanently changes them on the inside…and that’s the reason I enjoy working with them so much."
Beach2Battleship will begin at 7 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2009 with the swim segment starting at Wrightsville Beach. Over 1,400 athletes are expected to compete in the event, presented by New Hanover Regional Medical Center and Intracoastal Realty. Competitors from 41 states and 12 nations outside of the United States are registered for the event, which includes a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run. Dr. Brown will speak at Thursday’s athlete dinner at the Coastline Convention Center in downtown Wilmington about mental strategies to help gain a competitive edge. He will also address athletes on race day as they finish, or do not finish, as the case may be.
A former college athlete himself, Dr. Brown’s passion is to help dedicated athletes of all abilities achieve personal success, optimize the joy and contentment of being an athlete, and protect their character and integrity. He is on the Scientific Advisory Board for Runner’s World magazine and is also a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee’s Registry of Psychologists. Dr. Brown became the first-ever sport psychologist for the Boston Marathon medical team in 2002 and continues that post today. He is the author of The Competitive Edge: How to Win Every Time You Compete, and The Winner’s Brain: 8 Strategies Great Minds Use to Achieve Success. Find out more by visiting www.drjeffbrown.com.
