Local Business and Non-Profit Leaders Team Up for Light-the-Night Walk
Posted: 10-14-2009 : RALEIGH, N.C.
RALEIGH, N.C. -- A team of nearly 20 business and non-profit leaders have joined together to walk under one banner; to honor those who are battling or who have battled cancer.Participating in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's annual Light-the-Night Walk for leukemia and lymphoma research, this leadership team has found a way to use their resources in a grassroots kind of way.
“During our September Food4Thought luncheon, business leaders were invited to participate in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's charity walk and 10 luncheon attendees signed up immediately,” said Food4Thought host Mary Margaret Harris of Capital Bank.
Food4Thought host Lorana Price of Holy Cow Branding shares, “We are excited that we were able to get people in our key markets to take an active role in supporting our community. Many of us have faced the devastating effects of cancer, and we feel this walk is a positive way to engage in raising awareness for cancer research.”
Lea-Ann W. Berst of Sleddogg Marketing Management, a Food4Thought host, explains her involvement. “This event has a special place in my heart. While in remission from battling prostate cancer, my uncle Art recently found out he is in the second stage of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He begins chemo therapy this week. To all of us who have been touched by cancer, the Light-the-Night Walk is truly a unique event.”
Light-the-Night is an annual walk held each fall in communities throughout the United States and Canada to raise money for blood cancer research and patient services. Teams of co-workers, families and friends walk together in twilight holding illuminated balloons – white for survivors, red for supporters, and a single gold balloon that represents a loved one lost to cancer. The walk, which honors and commemorates lives touched by blood cancer, is a community celebration, with music, refreshments and family activities.
The Raleigh Light-the-Night Walk will take place this Saturday, October 17. If you would like to walk, or if you cannot participate in the walk but would like an opportunity to donate a gift, please visit the Food4Thought team homepage at: http://pages.lightthenight.org/nce/Raleigh09/Food4Thought.
