United Way of the Greater Triangle Receives Grant from Flextronics to Promote Teaming for Technology Program
Posted: 02-16-2010 : RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – United Way of the Greater Triangle’s “Teaming for Technology (T4T)” program recently announced a $5,000 grant from local electronic manufacturing services provider, Flextronics International. The grant was provided to empower rural NC youth participating in the NC Connected’s Boondocks Media School by giving them a home computer to help advance their achievements.
United Way of the Greater Triangle provides refurbished computers to low-income families and educational services through it’s T4T program . “The computers going to participants in NC Connected’s Boondocks program furthers United Way’s goal to provide educational programs with more accessible technology,” said T4T manager, Joe Burgess.
NC Connected’s partnership with United Way of the Greater Triangle’s T4T program helped refurbished over 150 computers through Flextronics Internationals grant, enabling each child who completes the Boondocks Media School to have a computer to support their continued learning.
NC Connected, Inc. was established five years ago to encourage young girls to participate in technology-related careers by providing them with training in internet technologies, exposure to role models, and life skills applications. The organization’s Boondocks Media School provides low-cost technology camps for children ages 10-17 years old, living in underserved communities. NC Connected sets up mobile computer labs in communities and teaches the children a variety of computer skills, including web design, internet programming and teamwork. After the camp, students receive ongoing training and opportunities to practice their web design skills.
The Boondocks Media School program will benefit underserved children living throughout North Carolina including those living in Craven, Durham, Edgecombe, Halifax, Johnston, Nash, New Hanover, Pender, Wake, and Wayne counties. Using the computers, these children will learn to build increasingly complex web sites and will be encouraged to use those skills to design sites for local nonprofits and area businesses.
