Be Active North Carolina launches statewide movement for healthy, physically active lifestyles
Posted: 02-05-2010 : MORRISVILLE, N.C.

Morrisville, N.C. – Be Active North Carolina announces the launch of its first ever membership campaign: Movement for Motion -inviting individuals to join the fight to get more people, more active, more often.

A Movement for Motion membership offers North Carolinians the tools needed to advocate for increased physical activity in their own communities and raise awareness of the many opportunities for physical activity in the state.

“Movement for Motion will not only help us sustain our programs, partnerships and initiatives, but will also energize a team of people who are passionate about physical activity and provide them with the opportunity to make meaningful change,” says Gary Gardner, Be Active NC’s Chief Executive Officer.

The Movement for Motion campaign is dedicated to creating change using the power generated when passionate people come together. The need for change in our state is immense. Today, more than 55% of North Carolinians are still not getting the recommended 30 minutes a day of physical activity, and for the first time in a century, American kids face a shorter life expectancy than their parents. This expected lifespan decrease is attributed to the nation’s obesity epidemic and its health consequences, in which inactivity is a major culprit.

"What distinguishes a Movement for Motion member is their passion for physical activity and motivation to help others. They understand that we need to raise awareness of opportunities to lead healthy, active lifestyles, and give people the tools and skills needed to stay active," Gardner said.

Movement for Motion members will enjoy a range of unique benefits and incentives designed to enhance their own experience while being advocates in the community. Four membership levels are available—walking, jogging, running, sprinting-- and benefit levels include privileges such as vendor discounts; personalized fitness and health ideas and updates; access to Be Active Steps, an online physical activity tracking system and an iPod shuffle.
