Advancing ‘Cool Science’ Together – NC STATE BTEC and Kryosphere
Posted: 02-05-2010 : DURHAM, N.C.
DURHAM, N.C. -- The Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC) located on NC State’s Centennial Campus and Kryosphere, Inc. announce a collaboration to advance science, education, and training in cryobiology, cryopreservation, and sample management and their crucial role in academic and industry research. In the first phase of this collaboration Kryosphere will provide BTEC and NCSU with biorepository services that meet cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practice) standards and develop curricula designed to introduce students to this emerging field.
“This collaboration between BTEC and Kryosphere will enhance the learning activities of the students and trainees that take courses at BTEC,” says Rick Lawless, Associate Director of Strategic Support, BTEC at NC State. “BTEC will have Kryosphere store a portion of its cell banks and critical archive samples to ensure business continuity. At the same time, this situation creates a ‘living-laboratory’ that maps closely to the principles already established by BTEC.”
In addition, BTEC will provide Kryosphere access to its campus facilities and resources and will help expand Kryosphere’s support to the NC State faculty and staff. “BTEC and NC State have recognized that assuring priceless samples is not only paramount to support research leading to new discoveries but it makes good business sense given the value of materials and research staff time. The loss, misplacement or failure to access samples can cost millions and set back research progress for years, “says Neil Jones, Vice President of Scientific Operations, Kryosphere.
Together BTEC, Kryosphere and NC State look forward to announcing additional collaborations including the opening of a new KryoCenter on Centennial Campus. Kryosphere (www.kryosphere.com), recognized as one of the top biorepositories in the country, provides expert GLP/GMP storage of biological samples, cold-chain-of-custody logistical support, and the management of clinical trial samples.
